Sitting with one of the community leader's and some participants at Platfontein near Kimberley. We had some great conversation around what impact the financial literacy training will have in the community and how it will change their pespective. Platfontein one of the cmmunities that are often faced with racially insensitive financial, systemic or service policies, despite legislative efforts to correct these practices. Thing's like having a good idea or even a good credit score and are refused to access funding from banks. Financial education is an integral piece in the systemic oppression around access to capital for Native communities. In our conversation I have discovered that native individuals are also the least likely of any minority group to have emergency funds or a banking/checking account of any other minority population in the nation. So Native families wouldn’t have access to the emergency loans necessary to keep families housed, fed, and safe through the pandemic crisis and its recovery period. Given this context, Native Communities are disproportionately challenged in creating generational wealth and passing down financial management knowledge to future generations. Financial education is important for our Native communities because we are building the foundation for lasting generational financial sustainability. Our traditional cultural practices are rooted in sophisticated resource management. When we bridge these practices with western financial management, as seen in our Building Native Communities suite of financial education curricula, Native families take traditional skills and modern financial language to navigate the "western economic systems". Unfortunately, financial education is not the overall solution to the barriers of financial inequality for Native communities; it is a stepping stone on the long path of creating equity in South African economic system. A lot of interventions are needed in our province, the Northern Cape.

This workers from cwp were so greatful for the opportunity. This is what they took from the training and will work on. With financial education programs, the employees can manage their previous debts while effectively taking care of their current expenses. They can further understand investing & budgeting which will also help in planning for retirement in the long term. In addition, it can help them save taxes and maintain a good credit score while avoiding financial fraud. It’s easy to see why employee financial education is becoming a benefit that businesses, organisation and govenment programmes across the country provide. It not only assists employees where they are most needed but also directly benefits the company through increased focus, better morale, increased productivity, and lower health costs. The supervisor said these training are help the project cos less people stay out of work. They see a sense of ownership, the morale and the confidence of the workers is high since the training.

I was training in Hammarsdale, doing modules 1-5,My highlights would be that the participants want to really invest their money in the different savings/investments,especially the RSA retail savings bond and the Endowment policy. So much so that they actually came back with more information for themselves and questions to verify that information.Module 5 was also a hit because it had to mostly do with business, most of the participants wanted to begin their own businesses, this module had a huge impact on them, took us more than the allocated time due to the interest that they had shown. All in all,the sessions were a success and more people have been calling asking for the next class, after hearing from the others that it went very well.

Coronation MFS & MM financial skills program. I ran this training in the rural area of Bothas Hill and I was very happy that the majority of the group was the youth and we had few older people who I thought will make the session more interesting and fruitful. The youth were overwhelmed by the knowledge on personal finance/ financial health we shared and they were more interested on the good saving methods that are out there to make then prosperous sooner in their life journey. The interaction was amazing as the older participants shared their sad earliest memories with money which mostly occurred because of lack of Financial literacy. The highlight of the day was when I did a practical example of a long term goal set for a child's tertiary education where the plan started from when the child was in Grade 8, the calculation of the estimate of how much should be saved just to cater for the registration fees at varsity/ collage. They were all shocked by the little amount that their parents should have saved monthy to get them to tertiary and some were emotional as their parents told them that they cannot afford to take them to varsity back then when you only needed the registration fees. This really showed how financial education is important in one's life, a life skill indeed! At the end of the session I was excited that the session had a positive impact on all age groups especially because such opportunities are rare in the rural areas, some of them even sent me messages to express their gratitude!
