Moretele Local Municipality is located in an area called Moretele, which is situated far north of Pretoria in the North West province. The municipality was established in 2000 and covers an area of 1 369km2. It is located strategically to join four provinces, namely North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. Moretele is the Setswana name for a river that runs through the area, namely Noka ya Moretele (the Moretele River).
The Municipality comprises 26 wards, which are made up of 74 villages and plots. Most villages are ruled by 4 traditional leaders(Dikgosi) who are recognized by law and who all represent their respective tribes/communities in council.
In 2024 during one of the Avocado worksite training I met a young lady by the name of Amogelang who was deeply impacted by the Money Fo Sho program, after the training she approached me and made a plead for me to come to her village and municipality in 2025 of which I agreed and that’s how I was introduced to Moretele Local Municipality.
Coronation Financial Literacy Training Program took place in 3 Villages over a period of 10 Days in March 2025 covering 9 modules in Total.
1. Village 1- Lebotloane:
Here in Lebotloane 5 days were spend impacting young entrepreneurs with boosting your income, credit management and funerals and finances amongst others. The Community was excited to learn about how to leverage their ideas and turning them into business and moreover learn about dealing with money theft like increasing debt. One person added that Borrowing should only be used for getting into profitability, anything else is money slavery.
2. Village 2 – Dikebu:
Budgeting skills and Planning for emergencies is one of the great modules used to help our people prepare for the unfortunate. Dikebu youth benefitted immensely from such relevant skills.
3. Village 3 – Ga Motla:
The community although struggling to put together the training on the final day in Moretele, the ward councilor intervened and assisted in gathering an enthusiastic crowd that learned very much from modules such as business risks and managing taxation. One of the leaders bemoaned the fact that South africa is one of those heavily taxed nations and lauded the fact that he did not know of the various taxes that exists.
The villages of Moretele and many in S A are buzzing with a lot of unemployed youth. Many of our youth are very hopeless as a result but thankfully the Avocado vision platform and fimacial literacy are bringing hope to these communities. It was truly wonderful to have Coronation, Avocado and Amogelang as Partners in Changing the negative narrative within our rural communities.
